How Green Was My Valley (1941) — 2 Comments

  1. I believe I watch more with my heart than my intellect, so I am good with How Green is My Valley. Guess I should watch more of Citizen Cain than “Rosebud”. 🙂

I could only recognize Walter Pigeon by his voice, but Maureen O’Hara and Roddy McDowell really did not change a lot as they got older.

Three of the songs I recognize as hymn tunes from church. That was exciting. They fit well with Alfred Newman’s score.

My quick research did not find a familial connection between Guy Pearce the makeup artist for this film and the current actor Guy Pearce.

    • “Citizen Kane” is a masterpiece. I don’t mean to take anything away from the film. At the same time, I don’t want to diminish in any way the quality and emotional impact of “How Green Was My Valley.” It’s a powerful film. You’re right that Walter Pigeon looks young here. Just a couple of years later, he was in “Mrs. Miniver,” and he seems more mature in that short time span. It’s interesting to see some stars come of age in Best Picture–winners. Also, I suppose “Guy Pearce” is a common enough name. The actor you mention is from Australia, so probably no connection.
