Oliver! (1968) — 2 Comments

  1. For me, the Who Will Buy is a standout. Seeing it for the first time on the big screen was stunning… song, dance and colors. WOW!
The quality of dance for so many young boys has always amazed me.
I am sorry to read about Jack Wild’s personal struggles after such an impressive start to his career.
So, I missed the whole mixed races and Jewish thing. I went back to review the ending. I see what you mean.
Speaking of the ending. This time around , I felt like a walked into a wall (not hard, but just enough to stop). After Fagin and Artful danced away, the buggy ride, Oliver’s stroll up the steps and the hug just faded into the sunset.
The credit dance sequence was so well coordinated, I watched the merry-go-round to see if they just kept running the film forward and back! Incredible.
Sometimes, I would sing the first couple of lines of You May Go, But Be Back Soon to my students when they would leave the room for some reason during class. They would just giggle and roll their eyes. 🙂

    • Great memories! Thanks for sharing them. I think this movie has a special place in the hearts of so many who saw it first at a young age. It holds up so well today, too.
